I'm a Yellow Nape Amazon parrot... one of the better known species of Amazons for their speaking ability. I'm almost all green in color except for a patch of yellow just above my beak and a larger patch of yellow on the back of my head, better known as my nape. That's where I get my name from. The Yellow Nape amazon is one of the sub-species of the nominate Yellow Fronted Amazon parrots that are found over a wide area, ranging from Central to South America. A number of different forms are recognized, all of which differ according to the extent of yellow plumage on their heads. The yellow plumage on the Yellow Nape amazon parrot (A. o. auropalliata) is confined to the nape of the neck and this particular sub-species is found from Mexico to Costa Rica and Honduras. The amazons may also show some variation in size. This parrot is also highly valued, both as a companion and as a mimic. Before purchasing one of these parrots, check that the nostrils are an even size, and show no sign of discharge or of being enlarged or blocked. These signs will usually indicate a respiratory infection to which these parrots are susceptible and which is often difficult to cure.
Anyway, as I said, I'm a Yellow Nape Amazon parrot and I'm another one of Mom's favorites cause I sing opera.... well I used to. 1998 has been a pretty rough year for me too, but I'm getting better because Mom has spent the last 6 months handfeeding me and pampering me since I had surgery in June. No one thought I was going to make it, but I fooled them all and finally started getting better around the beginning of September and even sang a few notes about a week after that. Whew, it's been a long hard crawl back from just how bad I was.
