African Grey (Psittacus erithacus) 13-14 inches
Originating from Equatorial Africa from the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Guinea to Lake Victoria. The African Grey can be found along a wide belt of central Africa which includes the forests of the Congo basin and the borders of the Gulf of Guinea which are rich in bird life. Virgin lowland rain forest, of which little now remains, consists of tall well-spaced trees with a thick canopy filtering out the rays of the sun and allowing virtually no understory to develop. The vegetation that most nearly approaches the widely held conception of "jungle" is not the natural forest but the thick, practically impenetrable tangle of trees, palms and climbing and scrambling liana's that quickly grow where forest has been cleared, farmed and then abandoned. This habitat has proved ideal for the African Grey parrot where they can roost in the safety of the tree canopy and then in the early morning descend in large flocks to take advantage of the clearings where they feed.
